For years, females have had a certain level of self-maintenance routines, from body hair removal, skin cleansing, moisturising and daily use of SPFs. Thirty years ago, the majority of men’s grooming maintenance consisted of shower, shave and a bit of the aftershave with matching scented deodorant stick for special occasions, of course. Moisturisers and body care products for men really did not exist back then.
There was also this mindset of masculinity and ego that prevented men from doing what they believed was feminising or showing weakness. Nowadays that mindset has partially changed, but some guys just won’t let go. The wiser of us know the benefits to regular maintenance. OK, so realistically, amongst us 40-year-olds (plus), it is still not discussed and we are discreet about our maintenance, so we are spreading our reach into different treatments and products.
Let’s face a fact, men’s product sales have been going through the roof and growing year on year. So with the help of Aoife (manager) and Michelle (assistant manager) at Privet we have looked at a program of treatments and included skincare products that should help improve my skin.
We picked from three non-invasive technologies that operate differently and have all been proven to improve the tone and texture of skin and are very effective. That is, the very popular Radio Frequency, HiFu (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) and Derma Rolling with Radio Frequency. The machine that we will be using combines all of the treatments in one is the 3DSkinMed produced by a company in Rugby who produced the very popular 3DLipo machine.
Over the next 16 weeks I have decided to put my money where my mouth is. When I first opened I had never had a pedicure or manicure and I have invested a lot of cash in the Rolls Royce of gadgets for the salon so I should, in theory, know what it all does and what it feels like and most importantly how well it works. Men are more aware of self-image and the effects of ageing has become a problem for men – they want to stay younger-looking for longer and why not?….
Just to note a patch test is required for these treatments which is usually done with a minimum of 24 hours prior to any treatment being commenced.

The first treatment on the list for me is RF or Radio Frequency. This is an amazing, non-invasive treatment that rejuvenates the skin, creating immediate results, with no down time or pain and the improvements get better with time and more sessions.
The RF handpiece heats the skin to between 39-42 degrees which is tested with a laser thermometer at regular intervals. RF heats the collagen-rich sub-dermal part of your skin. The localised heating causes an immediate contraction of collagen fibres and at the same time increases the metabolism of the fibroblasts, thereby accelerating the production of new collagen and elastin fibres. The concentration of collagen fibres and the regeneration of the collagen and elastin deposits tighten the skin layers, creating a smoother, healthier and younger-looking skin.*
To get the best results it is recommended to have a course of 6 sessions (depending on the area of concern). Sessions are every two weeks.
HiFu (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound )
Full Face and Neck (Treatment time 120 mins) £899.95
Eyes and Forehead/ Lower face/Neck (Treatment time 45/60 mins) £349.95
Lower Face and Neck (Treatment time 90 mins) £649.95
Non-surgical skin lifting has become one of the most sought-after treatments and HIFU is the latest non-surgical technology to excel in this area in just one single session!
It targets individually brow lifting, jowl line lifting, Nasolabial fold reduction, Periorbital wrinkle reduction and overall skin tightening and rejuvenation. The highly focused acoustic energy creates thermal coagulation zones at 3 different selected depths, following which a wound-healing response results in the formation of new collagen, thus providing a longer term tightening of the skin.
Generally a noticeable improvement in the patient’s facial contouring and fine lines and wrinkles will be visible within a 4-week period, whilst further improvement in facial skin tightening and wrinkles will be reportedly seen up to 6 weeks.
There is no down time associated with this non-invasive procedure.*
